We've supported Great Wall of China Walk
2009 saw one of our valued former employees walk the Great Wall of China in aid of the children's hospice charity, Demelza. Furniture Hire UK took it upon themselves to sponsor Lesley throughout her journey and supplied her with a unique wardrobe which included a variety of branded shirts and trousers.
The expedition was by no means an easy mission as the Great Wall currently stretches over approximately 6,400km, 4,000 miles from Shanhai Pass in the east to Lop Nur in the west. According to recent archaeological surveys it has been estimated that the entire Great Wall, with all of its branches, totals as much as 8,852km, 5,500 miles of constructed walls.
Demelza Hospice Care for children was set up by Derek and Jennifer Phillips following the death of their daughter, Demelza aged only 24 from a brain tumour. In 2003 the charity merged with Child, thus beginning a Capital Appeal to build Demelza South East London. In 2009 the new hospice was officially opened.
It is the support and hard work from ladies like Lesley which aids Demelza and many other charitable organizations. Demelza Hospice Care for Children supports children and many young people who are expected to die before reaching adulthood, and their families. In many cases there is no cure for the child's illness or treatment has been tried but failed and the focus has transferred from active to palliative care.
The determination and commitment of so many people, especially Lesley, enable charities such as Demelza to improve the services and facilities they offer.
