Who would have thought that Oktoberfest was born from a wedding celebration way back in 1810. Oktoberfest is the largest beer festival in the world and it's estimated that more than 6 million litres of Bavarian beer is consumed over a 17 or 18 day period. Roughly translated, that's 1 million gallons of beer!
The wedding celebration was held between Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen on the 12th October 1810 where all the townspeople were invited to join in with the festivities which took place on fields outside the city gates.
The merriment lasted for almost a week and was ended with an exciting horse race. The party was such a hit with the locals asked Kind Ludwig if they could continue the celebration the following year, and thus the happy couple agreed that such a festival should indeed be continued annually, hence Oktoberfest being born. 2022 makes the 187th anniversary of Oktoberfest and this year, there will even be new opening hours.
