New Year festival is one of the oldest and most universally observed celebrations around the globe. New Year begins on January 1st but this wasn’t always the case. Other dates such as 25th March and 25th December marked the start of the calendar. 2000 BCE is the earliest known record of a New Year festival in Mesopotamia, where in Babylonia the New Year began with the new moon after the spring equinox. Roman King Numa Pompilius reigned from 715-673 BCE and it is said that he revised the Roman republican calendar so that January replaced March as the first month. It was a fitting decision as January was named after Janus, the Roman god of all beginnings.
